What is microsuction

A clean, gentle method of removing earwax

A clean, gentle method of removing earwax

Microsuction removes earwax using a fine suction device while the clinician views the ear canal directly through a microscope — without flushing any water into the ear. It is widely considered one of the safer and more comfortable methods of wax removal, with no soaking or syringing required.

Why microsuction

A gentler way to clear earwax

A gentler way to clear earwax

Performed under direct vision

The clinician views your ear canal through a microscope throughout, so wax is removed precisely and safely.

No messy water flushing

Wax is removed with gentle suction alone — no soaking, no syringing and no water left in the ear.

Quick, comfortable appointments

Most visits are short and straightforward, with both ears usually seen in a single appointment.

Carried out by trained clinicians

Every procedure is performed by a clinician trained in ear care, with an assessment built into the appointment.

An option when syringing isn’t

Microsuction is often suitable for people who cannot have ear syringing or irrigation.

Designed to feel comfortable

With no water and a careful, controlled technique, most people find the procedure well tolerated.

Who it’s for

Common reasons people book microsuction

Common reasons people book microsuction

Microsuction is used to clear earwax in a range of everyday situations. If any of the following sound familiar, a clinician can assess whether microsuction is right for you.

Blocked or impacted earwax

A build-up of wax that feels uncomfortable or won’t shift with drops alone.

Tinnitus linked to wax

Ringing or buzzing that may be associated with a build-up of earwax.

Muffled or reduced hearing

Sounds feel dull or distant and you suspect wax may be part of the cause.

Hearing aid users

Keeping the ear canals clear so hearing aids fit and perform as they should.

Earache or a feeling of pressure

Fullness, blockage or discomfort in the ear that you’d like assessed and cleared.

Before audiology or hearing tests

Clearing wax beforehand so a hearing assessment can be carried out accurately.

Using olive oil or softening drops for a few days beforehand can make wax easier to remove. This is general guidance only and will be confirmed by your clinician at the appointment.
